Ask Father Rudy: Atheism, Raising Spiritual Children, Caring & Tithing

I'm posting four more answers to your questions for our second attempt at "Ask Father Rudy". I welcome your questions and will try to answer them for you. Feel free to ask more questions via comment, message on facebook (www.facebook.com/olgbronx), direct message on twitter (www.twitter.com/olgbronx) or e-mail olgnsgbronx@gmail.com. I can't wait to respond to the next set of questions next week Wednesday. Stay tuned!

God Bless You Family in Christ.

Question 1:
Primarily, I was (what I now realize) a church fanatic. I had read the Bible daily – Correction – memorized it. I’m now an atheist. I feel I don’t know enough to say with confidence that God doesn’t exist. My question is: Why is it that people, when things go well, praise God, but there’s no credit to God when things go wrong? God does smite.

We can only appreciate the results of "when things go wrong" after they have happened; we have grown, and can look back and realize that yes, this or that incident, problem issue happened for a reason.  Through our perseverance and faith we get through it and can realize that God was there all along.  When things are going wrong, it’s hard to praise God; yet if we have a strong faith, deep down we KNOW that God is in charge, we are not, and he WILL take care of us.  BTW:  If you feel with confidence that you cannot say that God does not exist then you are not an atheist!  Hang in there and be open to God's love for YOU.

Question 2:
Can you break down tithing responsibilities especially in these trying economic times and financial responsibilities people have in their household?

Tithing is not only scriptural, but it is also a test of our faith in God.  Logically, if we are facing hard times, as all are in this economy, it’s difficult to see how we can give 5% of what we make to God's church and 5% to a charity; and yet, when we DO, it all comes back in one way or another as God has promised, see the following: and test God when you give back to Him from what he has given to you..
·         Proverbs 3:9  (ESV)Honor the Lord with your wealth
and with the first fruits of all your produce
·         Malachi 3:1010 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.
·         2 Corinthians 9:7   Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Question 3:
How does one become an authentically caring person without burning out, being taken advantage of, or an enabler?
One becomes a caring person when one truly sees Christ in those whom He puts in our path to care for, while at the same time seeking time and caring from others ourselves.  We need to value ourselves, and care for our own needs before or better yet, while caring for others...."love God and neighbor AS you love yourself."
 Question 4:
I’m married to a non-Catholic. My partner and I are having a hard time raising coming to an agreement with how to raise our child and nurture them spiritually. My partner is a practicing Muslim, but, in general, what do you suggest as things we should reflect on to come to some sort of compromise if possible?
As a Catholic you took on the responsibility of raising your children Catholic and your husband should have been informed of this; thus baptizing your children and bringing them up in the faith.  Practically, this may be difficult, yet that is still YOUR responsibility.  Along with that, you can take whatever credences involve the law of LOVE which comes from each faith and teach your child to be loving, compassionate, and good.  If both of you are strong in each of your faiths, you will be able to do this: respecting one another and wanting the best for your child.

Ask Father Rudy: Bible Books, Alcoholism, & Practicing your Faith

You've asked four questions for our first try at "Ask Father Rudy". I welcome your questions and will try to answer them for you. Feel free to ask more questions via comment, message on facebook, or e-mail olgnsgbronx@gmail.com. I can't wait to respond to the next set of questions next week Wednesday.

God Bless You!

Fr. Rudy

------------------------------------------------------------------

Question 1:

When looking at bibles, I see that there’s a King James Version and an “NIV”. The NIV has the book of Sirach where the King James Version does not. How come they aren’t in both? How do I decide which version of the bible is the one I should read?

Regarding Sirach:   It's not included in the Protestant versions of the Bible you mean. The Catholic versions have it.

Because in the year 1800 the people who were publishing the KJV decided to remove it and several other books of the Bible. All the versions of the KJV from 1611 to the year 1800 contained it and the other books.

The book of Sirach, which I have read, is an absolutely wonderful addition to the Bible. In the days of the early church, it was often called the "teaching" book because it contained so much wisdom for new Christians. Several New Testament authors quote from it in their writings. It's a shame that so many Christians don't get the full story.

Oh and please note that book of Ecclesiasticus is completely different from the book of Ecclesiastes.

Question 2:

When choosing a church, how do I ignore the drama within the church and continue to minister within that church?

Drama has always existed due to the human nature we all share.  Your faith is based on JESUS and His teachings, thats what will guide your actions and words.  Drama and people usually gives me plenty to pray for and about.  Continuing DOING what the Lord asks you to do and make a difference in the lives of those who are involved in the drama.

Question 3:

What do you recommend as a daily spiritual routine if a person can’t attend daily mass but wants to practice their faith?

Place yourself whenever you consciously think of God, in His presence.  In the train, car, work, school.  Your entire day could be a prayer.  In all those moments God will reach you and guide you.

Question 4:

If I’m a recovering alcoholic and trying to receive the blood of Christ (which is wine), how do I partake in receiving the blood of Christ?

When you receive Holy Communion in what appears to be bread (the consecrated Host)  you ARE receiving the entire body of Jesus, including His Blood as it were.  Do not feel pressure to consume the Blood of Christ, you are already receiving the Lord in the host.  No need to set yourself up for a fall.  God bless you.

Fr. Rudy's Corner: Oct. 20, 2013

Dearest friends:

What a wonderful day we had last Sunday! A Mass filled with cultural diversity, beautiful music, Cardinal Egan who left so impressed with our community; and then a magnificent luncheon with great food, music and a wonderful sense of community, with everyone working together and having fun. So many thanks to all who participated, supported and attended our 89th anniversary celebration. We hold dear to our hearts the commission which Cardinal Egan imposed upon us: “to bring others to our church and fill its pews by 2014, when we celebrate our 90th anniversary. YOU, do your part then and if we can all take this command seriously, we can certainly pack our beautiful church in one year. We are not just a closed existing family, but we are a family open to the presence of anyone whom the Lord sends our way to invite in. Surely we will encounter many brothers and sisters in our path whom we can bring to OLG. May the blessings we received last Sunday be in your hearts as you read this message. Have a blessed week!!

Seguramente nosotros vamos a encontrar muchos hermanos y hermanas en nuestro camino a quienes nosotros podemos traer a NUESTRA SENORA DE LA GRACIA. Que las bendiciones que hemos recibido este pasado Domingo este en sus corazones así como usted lee este mensaje. Que tenga una semana bendecida!!

Fr. Rudy's Corner: Oct. 6, 2013

Dearest friends:

The new archdiocesan revitalization schema: Making All Things New, has begun. A meeting of the area parish representatives was held last week to begin this yearlong endeavor to: Maximize the vibrancy of parish life in the Archdiocese of New York. To foster an appreciation for and  participation in Sunday Eucharist. To promote new evangelization methods. To implement parish planning, considering the needs of the people, the projected number of priests available to serve, financial resources and changing demographics. To ensure quality Christian education and formation. To promote vocations and to build a greater sense of unity among Catholics from all cultures within the local Church. A core group from our parish has been formed and will be the liaison between us, the diocese and eventually a cluster of our area churches. Of course as things progress, you will be informed; in the meantime, we pray for the success of this undertaking. Finally: ALL are welcome to participate in our 89th anniversary Mass next Sunday at 11AM with Cardinal Egan, followed by the luncheon for those who already have purchased tickets.

Have a blessed week!
