Father Rudy's Corner: December 15, 2013

FATHER RUDY’S CORNER

Advent is a time to grow in faith, express thankfulness and embrace service. This Third Sunday of Advent is called “GAUDETE” a word from Latin which means joy. The time is close and we are waiting with great anticipation, hope, and joy for His coming. As Saint Paul in the letter to the Philippians 4:4-5 says: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near.” Let us take the challenge and accept the call of John the Baptist to prepare the way of the Lord.

Thanks to Desmond Pierre for planning the wonderful Holy Hour, last Wednesday, December 4th, with the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for the recovery of our Pastor Fr. Rudy. He was informed of this and he is very grateful to each one of us who has participated in the prayer service. His message last week to all the parishioners was to let us know that he has been going through a very difficult time, but ‘Thanks Be To God’ and with the help of our prayers, he has seen the light at the end of the tunnel. He is slowly recuperating and doing much better each day. Please continue to pray for him so that he will be with us soon.

This past Thursday, December 12th, we had the Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our many thanks go to everyone who has worked in the preparation and the celebration of this Feast,

whom has been acclaimed as "Queen of Mexico", "Patroness of the Americas", "Empress of Latin America", and "Protectress of Unborn Children" (title given by Pope John Paul II in

1999). Under this title, she was also proclaimed "Heavenly Patroness of the Philippines" in 1935, a designation revised by Pope Pius XII in 1942.

We are grateful for the work and the dedication that tooth place in organizing this event with great love and devotion to the Blessed Mother. May Our Lady of Guadalupe obtain for us from her Son, the grace of keeping our faith, the sweet hope in the midst of the trials of life, the burning love for one another and the precious gifts of obedience and perseverance in the Christian way of life.

We welcome and give thanks to Rev. Msgr. Luis Michael from Jamaica, W.I who will be the celebrant at the 10:00AM Mass!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Come and join us at our “Advent Spiritual” event: LESSONS AND CAROLS, next Sunday, December 22nd at 4:00 PM, at the Church of Our Lady of Grace. All are welcome to enjoy this wonderful festive evening!

A Pastoral Letter by: St. Charles Borromeo

The Season of Advent

The Spirit, now the acceptable time speaks of beloved, the day of salvation, peace and reconciliation: the great season of Advent. This is the time eagerly awaited by the patriarchs and prophets, the time that holy Simeon rejoiced at last to see. This is the season that the Church has always celebrated with special solemnity. We too should always observe it with faith and love, offering praise and thanksgiving to the Father for the mercy and love he has shown us in this mystery. In his infinite love for us, though we were sinners, he sent his only Son to free us from the tyranny of Satan, to summon us to heaven, to welcome us into its innermost recesses, to show us truth itself, to train us in right conduct, to plant within us the seeds of virtue, to enrich us with the treasures of his grace, and to make us children of God and heirs of eternal life.

Each year, as the Church recalls this mystery, she urges us to renew the memory of the great love God has shown us. This holy season teaches us that Christ’s coming was not only for the benefit of his contemporaries; his power has still to be communicated to us all. We shall share his power, if, through holy faith and the sacraments, we willingly accept the grace Christ earned for us, and live by that grace and in obedience to Christ.

The Church asks us to understand that Christ, who came once in the flesh, is prepared to come again. When we remove all obstacles to his presence he will come, at any hour and moment, to dwell spiritually in our hearts, bringing with him the riches of his grace.

In her concern for our salvation, our loving mother the Church uses this holy season to teach us through hymns, canticles and other forms of expression, of voice or ritual, used by the Holy Spirit. She shows us how grateful we should be for so great a blessing, and how to gain its benefit: our hearts should be as much prepared for the coming of Christ as if he were still to come into this world.

The same lesson is given us for our imitation by the words and example of the holy men of the Old Testament.

Father Rudy's Corner: Dec. 1, 2013 (1st Sunday of Advent)

Dearest friends:
Happy New Year!!! Yes, for our Catholic Church this is a new year, for it is the beginning of Advent. It is a time when we begin to recall that Jesus promised to return again, and to recall his first coming as a little baby that first Christmas. Advent thus is a time of Joyful Expectation...

Expectation of what, you ask?

His second coming, of course. We don't like to think about this because we are fearful of not being ready to encounter the Lord suddenly. We like to be in control and plan everything in our lives, and yet he tells us that His return will be unexpected. But if we are living according to His law of love already, why be afraid? Advent is a time to reflect on our relationship with God and those He has put in our lives; and if we really want to have control of everything in our lives, then we need to take control of our spiritual readiness to see Jesus whenever He should return. This ought to be an exciting endeavor. During this Advent we are invited to attend daily Mass,
go to confession, make time for prayer during our day, and plan our spiritual strategy to encounter the Lord.

Please plan ahead and mark your calendars: on Thursday December 19th at 7pm, Brother John
Malich will be offering an evening of recollection to help us in our Advent journey. And for those who can not attend the evening session, he will offer it again on Saturday December 21 at 3pm. This will be held in ourchurch hall. Here is an opportunity for ALL to participate and it is yet another spiritual event to celebrate our 89-90 parish jubilee celebration. Please plan to join us.

Have a blessed week!!!

+Year of Faith

Dear Friends in the Lord:
This past August, I had the joy and privilege of traveling to Drogheda (Ireland) with the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal of our archdiocese to re-open a convent once staffed by a community of women religious who taught me in elementary school in Ballwin, Missouri. They will continue the exemplary work of caring for the elderly and poor of that region since the sisters who taught me are no longer able to do so inasmuch as most of them are now retired -- well, from their active apostolates, not from their love of and commitment to the Lord and His
Church.
The same is true herein New York. All of us are able to recall and give thanks to the Lord for the thousands of retired Catholic sisters and brothers whose hard work, prayer, and personal sacrifices helped build and sustain our schools, hospitals, and charitable agencies. I shudder to think where we would have been and where we would be without these dedicated women and men who gave and give tirelessly of their lives in extraordinary service to our archdiocese.
On December 7 and 8, our parishes will take up the annual archdiocesan collection for those sisters and brothers who are now in their senior years. This special collection affords us an opportunity to offer them, in return for all they have done for us, our love and support by helping to provide for their needs. When Sister Bosco, who taught me in the third grade and is now retired, beamed as we re-opened her convent, I could not have been happier. Please help us in helping our retired sisters and brothers here in the archdiocese by making as generous a contribution to their collection as you can.

With prayerful best wishes for a blessed Advent,
I am, Faithfully in Christ,
Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan
Archbishop of New York

Queridísimos amigos:
Feliz Ano Nuevo!!!

Timothy Michael Cardenal Dolan
Arzobispo de Nueva York

Father Rudy's Corner: Nov. 24, 2013

Dearest friends:
What a glorious weekend this is. Why, you ask? Because this is CHRIST THE KING weekend,
the last week of the liturgical year. Next week we begin the Advent Season. How do YOU honor the KING? No I don't mean, Elvis, or MLK...I mean Jesus THE King. Does He have a throne in your heart? Do you serve Him as king? ALL the time, not just when you need him. Do you follow His precepts? Are you faithful to him, as His subject? Do you appreciate the humility of our King? Are you a good representative of the King? Very often we take these questions for
granted and because we do, we do not act as we should....as loyal children of a wonderful king...Jesus. Sing to Him today, worship Him today, Honor Him today, love Him today, for he IS your king....benevolent, just, and totally in love with YOU!

Have a blessed week!
Father Rudy

Our Lady of Providencia
Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make this celebration special. May Our Lady bless our Puerto Rican Community and all of our parish always.

Thanksgiving Eve Mass
Come and give THANKS to the Lord for all His blessings to you. Mass will be on Wednesday,
November 27th at 7pm. Before the rush, the shopping, the family dinner, and the turkey....come and say Thank You to the one who makes this holiday possible.

Our Lady of Grace Rectory

Thursday, November 28th
Have A Blessed Holiday!

No, yo no quiero decir , Elvis, o DLK ... yo quiero decir Jesús EL Rey.

+Timothy Michael Cardenal Dolan+
